  1. You’re really starting to find your legs on this I think. You get better at this every episode.

I’d have to say that I support Comcast’s decision to throttle Bittorrent. Torrents of illegal content are the cause of many of the cease and desist orders that are sent to ISPs, and a huge drain on bandwidth for the provider. It’s perfectly within their rights and interests to try to put a limit on this, and hopefully discourage illegal activity that results in a lot of work for Comcast from all the CoD’s.

I have a hard time thinking of more than a handful of torrents of legitimate, legal content that couldn’t also be downloaded just as easily over some other protocol. The usual things that people who like torrents quote are Linux ISOs and such, but it’s not difficult to find free software hosted on university servers. The vast, vast majority of Bittorrent traffic is of pirated content.

The sad thing is, it’s even a very poor way to download illegal content. The protocol is very insecure, resulting in anyone connecting to the tracker being able to enumerate IP addresses that are serving up parts of the data. Some say that it is better to use private trackers, but these are rarely exclusive enough to keep out someone who really wants to track you down (think of how easy it was for you to get an account).

Regarding ndiswrapper, I’ve found (with other people’s computers) that it can be unstable, unreliable, and is rarely worth the trouble, when you compare it with picking up a $20 intel IPW card on ebay that will work natively, and very well. A decent card is also a must if you’re into wireless pen-testing and want to use tools like Kismet.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Agreed. You are right. Comcast is trying to clam down on piracy, but what about people that are downloading legal torrents?

Also, I do find ndiswrapper unreliable too. I tried it and it didn’t work at all.

    Thanks for listening :)

  3. There are legal torrents, I’ll definitely agree with that. But I haven’t seen very much legal content that was only available as a torrent. Really large rainbow tables, perhaps. But for most content there are alternative means that don’t manage to hijack all available bandwidth ;) .

  4. hi Matthew love your work Dad
